About This Artifact
The Language of Roman Coinage
In the late Roman Republic, coins were one of the most powerful forms of political communication. Each year, the three officials (tresviri monetales) responsible for the mint chose imagery that referenced their own family histories, celebrated Roman gods and virtues, or commemorated recent military victories — making Republican denarii a unique document of the political imagination of the ruling class.
This denarius was struck by the moneyer Postumius Albinus around 96 BCE. The obverse traditionally carries a portrait of the goddess Roma or a deified ancestor; the reverse shows a scene from Roman history or mythology related to the moneyer's gens (family clan). The quality of the engraving — the crisp portrait style, the balanced composition — reflects the skills of the Rome mint at its Republican peak.
Silver Purity
Republican denarii, unlike later Imperial coins, were struck from high-purity silver (typically 95–98%). This example retains a full silvery surface with the natural iridescent toning that develops on ancient silver over centuries of burial — known to numismatists as "cabinet tone" — which is considered highly desirable and is impossible to fake convincingly.
