About This Artifact
The Last Kingdom of Al-Andalus
The Nasrid Dynasty (1230–1492) was the last Muslim kingdom on the Iberian Peninsula, ruling from Granada while Christian kingdoms to the north gradually reduced Muslim territory. Yet these final two centuries produced some of the most sublime architecture ever created: the Alhambra Palace, with its muqarnas vaulting, intricate plasterwork, and celebrated tilework.
Andalusian tiles of the late Nasrid period combined the Islamic tradition of geometric and arabesque decoration with the lustre techniques developed in Abbasid Iraq and transmitted through Fatimid Egypt and Norman Sicily to the western Mediterranean. The cobalt blue painting on this tile — applied over an opaque white tin glaze, then dusted with gold before a final transparent glaze — achieves an extraordinary depth of colour and surface richness.
Technique
The production of lustre tiles required multiple firings and precise atmospheric control in the kiln — reducing the oxygen in the final firing to deposit a thin layer of metallic copper and silver particles on the glaze surface, creating the iridescent gold-bronze sheen. This technique was so demanding that only a handful of workshops across the Islamic world mastered it fully.
